STATE COLLEGE — Selinsgrove almost let a six-run lead slip away in the seventh inning of Friday’s state baseball final against Beaver, but in the end the Seals came away with the gold,

Selinsgrove weathered the late push by Beaver that produced three runs, but with reliever Ryan Reich on the mound Selinsgrove held on to take a 7-4 victory over Beaver in the Class 4A final at State College’s Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

It is the first state title in the history of Selinsgrove’s baseball program, which finished the season with a 20-5 record.

Beaver (17-8) made things interesting in the seventh as Dominic Patrella and Braydon Hansen both singled before Harrison Pontoli loades the bases by reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Jack Yanssens brought home the first run in the inning by drawing a walk and then Vincent Mastrangelo, facing Reich, was hit by a pitch to bring another run home.

A sacrifice fly to center by Alec Berg closed Beaver’s gap to 7-4, but it was a big out for Reich after he issued a walk to Zachary Hansen to reload the bases.

However, Reich worked out of the jam by getting the next two outs to complete Selinsgrove’s state championship.

Beaver opened up scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Yanssens.

In the bottom of the first the Seals tied the game on Blaise Zeiders’ RBI double that plated Teague Hoover.

Selinsgrove began pulling away in the third behind Nate Schon’s RBI single brought home Ben Heim.

In the fifth the Seals got even farther ahead when Josh Nylund hit an RBI single before scoring on an error, and then Ryan Aument hit a two-run triple to center to bring home two more for a 7-1 lead.

Zeiders got the win for Selinsgrove. He allowed five hits and four runs over six innings, along with four strikeouts.

Yanssens took the loss for Beaver. He surrendered five runs on six hits over four innings, striking out two and walking zero.

Selinsgrove tallied 10 hits on the day, with Hoover and Heim each going 2-for-3.
