Elena Malone

Lewisburg’s Elena Malone (center) wins the 400-meter run as the Green Dragons swept the event in the meet against Milton Tuesday. Teammates Chloe Michaels (R) and Selena Permyashkin (L) finished second and third, respectively.

LEWISBURG — With a sweep in the jumps from Darren Baidoo, Lewisburg held off Milton, 82-68, for the Heartland-II victory at the Pawling Athletic Complex on Tuesday.

“It was a pretty solid win, but Milton competed hard and challenged us in many places — especially on the track. I was thinking we could have scored in a few spots that we did not,” said Lewisburg coach Ron Hess. “This was a good test for the next phase of the season. We are going into the large invitationals and post league competition and I feel we did okay, but need to build on what we did today.”

Baidoo won the long jump (20-3 1/2), triple jump (41-4 1/2) and high jump (5-8). In addition for Lewisburg, Zach Bedell won the 110 high hurdles (15.79) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.93).

“I am very excited about this team and what is to come. I think we have a good shot at taking wins even in the post season competition,” said coach Hess. “We need to protect our biggest asset, which is health, so that is always a concern. It will be important to get Dylan Farronato back and Peter Lantz back, and hopefully maintain health for the rest of the squad.”

For Milton, Owen Keister claimed both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 11.85 and 24.03, respectively.

In addition for the Black Panthers, Kellan Guinn-Bailey picked up his first individual victory of the season when he claimed the 800 in 2:03.41.

“The race felt good. A 2:03.41 is a solid time, but it’s not where I want to be at the end of the year,” said Guinn-Bailey, who also helped Milton’s 1600 relay team to a victory in 3:35.72. “After the 800 I wasn’t sure if we could win, but I knew when it was close I had a good chance to win.”

On the girls side, Lewisburg took a 95-55 victory over Milton.

Elena Malone and Siena Brazier both won a pair of individual events for Lewisburg. Malone took the 200 (27.16) and the 400 (1:01.57), plus Brazier won both hurdles races in 17.03 and 50.87, respectively.

“This was a very high-quality win for our program, as we have great respect for Milton and the girls look forward to challenging themselves against their talented roster. We took some tough losses in the field and on the track, but the team rallied in the face of setbacks. I am so proud of how the girls relentlessly competed today,” said Lewisburg coach Michael Espinosa.

“Brazier’s win in the 300 hurdles as a hard-fougt battle against Milton’s Kylie Roup, plus Lizabeth Fessler’s win in the triple jump was a PR, Maddy Downs’ win in the discus was critical because Milton’s throwers dominated against us, 21-6, plus Emma Freeman’s 8-0 clearance in the pole vault earned her a PR and second place in an event where we were not scheduled to score any points.”

Leading Milton in the meet was Leah Walter, who won the 800 (2:30.15) and the 1600 (5:40.97).

Lewisburg and Milton will both be back in action Saturday at noon when they head to the Lock Haven Invitational No. 2.
