DANVILLE  — With temperatures soaring above 90 degrees at Echo Field, the Warrior Run 8-9-10 softball all-stars used their bats to provide a ton of fireworks on a sweltering Fourth of July.

Warrior Run actually trailed by three runs heading into the top of the fourth inning, but the Defenders broke out for 11 runs in the frame to seize momentum and take control of the contest.

“At this age level, it’s very hard for the girls to stay focused on a day like today,” Warrior Run head coach Cody Reeder said. “It’s tough, it really is. My girls needed to turn it on and they did. It took them an inning or two to get going, but once they were in the zone, they started playing some ball.”

Warrior Run took advantage of 12 Danville errors, but also pounded out 12 hits en route to a convincing victory which puts them into the championship series against Mifflinburg, which will begin today.

The two teams squared off in the second round of the tournament and Mifflinburg cruised to a 21-0 victory, something Reeder believes his team can use as a valuable learning tool as the two teams prepare to meet for a District 13 title.

“We’ve seen what they have and Mifflinburg has a lot of pitching,” Reeder said. “There is no team in this league that is prepared to handle what Mifflinburg brings to the table in terms of hitting. The girls just need to be ready and aggressive at the plate.”

Warrior Run leadoff hitter Mackenzie Litchard hard herself quite an afternoon, both at the plate and on the mound.

Litchard went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and also picked up the victory in relief of starter Cait Waltman.

Warrior Run must now beat Mifflinburg twice to win the district, something Reeder knows will not be a simple task.

“We come right back out tomorrow, no time to practice,” Reeder said. “Hopefully the girls get a good night’s sleep and relax tomorrow.”
