MIFFLINBURG — Elwood J. “Woody” Dale, 87, of 121 Market St., Mifflinburg, died at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in Riverwoods, Lewisburg.
Born Jan. 15, 1921, in Millmont, he was the son of the late William O. and Mary (Wagner) Dale.
He and his wife, the former Emma Campbell, were married March 18, 1960, in the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church.
Mr. Dale graduated from Mifflinburg High School with the Class of 1938.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on Aug. 6, 1942. He was stationed in the Marshall Islands and earned the rank of staff sergeant. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 18, 1945.
Following his military tour of duty, he was employed at the state hospital in Laurelton. He was later employed at the Mifflinburg Body Co.
In the 1950s, he was hired by contractor Stan Seiple of Sunbury. He remained at the company as a construction foreman for 31 years, retiring in 1983.
Mr. Dale was particularly proud of being involved with the Mifflinburg Area High School building project.
He was a member of the Thomas H. Clapham American Legion Post 410, Mifflinburg; Yoder-Zimmerman VFW Post 1964, Mifflinburg; Buffalo Valley Sportsman Club; and the “Ponderosa” Hunting Club.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dale is survived by two sisters, Rhelda Valentine and Mary Wehr, both of Mifflinburg; five sisters-in-law, Margaret “Margie” Dale of Gulfport, Fla., Mary Elizabeth Dale and Mary Ann Dale, both of Lewisburg, Connie Crook of New Berlin and Ruth Dennithorn of Coatesville; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Dale; and five brothers, Maxwell Dale, William Dale, Kenneth Dale, Kermit Dale and Paul Dale.
There will be no public viewing.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Services, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, with the Rev. Ronald Warfle officiating. Interment with military honors will be in East Side Cemetery, Mifflinburg.
