Looking for a little something different to give Mom this Mother’s Day? Why not take her to a concert or on a river cruise?
The 43rd annual Lewisburg Music Recital by students of Ruth Blankenship will be presented as a Mother’s Day musicale at the Slifer House Museum, starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The concert is free and open to the public, though free-will donations will be accepted. Gary Parks, director of the Slifer House, said the museum will serve ice cream, including flavors such as butter pecan and chocolate marshmallow, following the concert.
Weather permitting, the concert will be held on the front yard of the museum. In the event of rain, it will be moved to an inside location on the RiverWoods campus.
“It will be a wonderful event and should be a very pleasant venue with the flowers coming up and the birds out,” Parks said. “It’s a great opportunity to see these talented young kids performing.”
The concert will feature “movie soundtrack favorites,” Parks said, by performers Amanda Albright, Tiffany Bartol, Maggie Connolly, Nathan Fisher, Robby Murcek and Brandy Vassey, with guest Matt Poermsky also performing.
The ensemble will sing tunes that will include “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” and “Edelweiss.”
Piano solos will include “The Entertainer” and “Somewhere.”
Duets and solos will feature “All I Ask of You,” “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin,” “Moon River,” “Somewhere My Love,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “Under the Sea,” “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I Have Dreamed.”
If you wish to test your sea legs, the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat in Williamsport will be holding a Mother’s Day brunch cruise starting 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Trolley Gazebo at Trinity Place on West Fourth Street.
“We have been holding the cruise for a number of years now and it has been very successful,” said Skip Cochran, marketing director.
The Mother’s Day cruise generally kicks off the Hiawatha’s summer brunch cruise series.
Mothers and their loved ones will take a trolley to brunch, which will be held in the ballroom of the 143-year-old Park Place Building.
“The building is beautiful and it is right next to Peter Herdic Transportation Museum,” Cochran said. “It is only one of two Civil War era hotels remaining that were built specifically for the railway.”
Cochran hopes moms and their loved ones will come out and enjoy the fresh air and views to be had on the river.
“We have people who come from up and down the East Coast because they want to bring their mothers to something really unique,” Cochran said.
Tickets are $25 a piece for adults, and $20 for children ages 4 to 12. Space is still available and tickets can be purchased by calling 326-2500 or 800-248-9287.
