Rotary sponsors World’s Greatest Meal to help end polio

The Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary Club recently participated in a worldwide recognition of World Polio Day. Billed as the ‘World’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio’ club members, as well as community participants, abstained from their luncheon meal and instead donated the cost of that meal to PolioPlus efforts of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Some members did ‘brown bag’ their lunches, which the club provided, at a cost of $10. Started in 1985, Rotary’s PolioPlus program set out to eradicate polio from the planet at a time when annual cases of the disease numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Today, thanks to efforts of Rotary and its global partners, the organization is on the verge of certifying the world polio free. Completion of this mission will mark only the second time in human history that a disease has been eradicated. This year the club surpassed last year’s donations, raising more than $1,100 for PolioPlus.
