Dairy princess speaks to Rotarians

Khristyn Maurer, the 2019-2020 SUN Area Dairy Princess, was the recent featured speaker at the Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary Club. Maurer, of Pitman, is the daughter of Diane and the late Bruce Maurer. She said her love for the agriculture industry started as she worked on her neighbor’s dairy farm, Dawn-Mar Farms, where she help to wash, milk and feed more than 80 cows. She said her main goal as dairy princess is to promote the agriculture industry in a positive way. One way she is doing that is speaking about ‘Fill a Glass with Hope,’ an initiative by the American Dairy Association North East, Feeding Pennsylvania and the PA Dairymen’s Association, to provide fresh milk to families in need. According to Maurer, milk is one of the most requested items at food banks, but it is rarely donated. Funds to purchase milk for area food banks is raised through grants, corporate sponsors and individual donors. Launched as a pilot during the 2015 PA Farm Show, the program has raised more than $840,000. Each $1 donated provides approximately eight servings of milk. A graduate of Tri-Valley schools in 2019, she will start at HACC this month to study phlebotomy. For more information on Fill a Glass with Hope contact Feeding Pennsylvania at 717-724-3194.
