Teen killed in ATV crash in southern Northumberland County

A mangled four-wheeler lies in the middle of Route 125 near Pitman on Monday evening following a fatal collision with a sedan that left a teen girl dead.

PITMAN — A teen girl died Monday evening when the ATV she was riding was struck by a sedan at the intersection of Schwaben Creek Road and Route 125 in Upper Mahanoy Township, near the border of Northumberland and Schuylkill counties, authorities said.

Reports from the scene of the deadly crash indicated the girl, whose name has not yet been released, was a passenger on an ATV driven by her female friend. They were traveling in a group of three ATVs and had just pulled from a stop sign on Schwaben Creek Road at about 6:11 p.m.

A car traveling on Route 125 struck at least one of the ATVs broadside, reports said. The teen who was killed and her driver were both thrown from the vehicle, which came to a rest in the middle of the road.

The driver was flown by medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Her passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley.

No information was immediately available as to the condition of the female driver or any of the other ATV riders.

Following the collision, the sedan came to a stop in a ditch on the west side of the highway. No information was immediately available on the operator of the sedan, identified only as a woman.

The road was shut down between Schwaben Creek Road and County Line Road following the crash. A PennDOT spokesman said the closure was expected to last several hours and a detour is in place using local roads.

Police were on the scene late into the evening and had called in an accident reconstruction unit from state police at Montoursville, Lycoming County.
