Bergey ups gold count to 3

Milton’s Leah Bergey cruised to victories in the 100 and 300 hurdles.

WILLIAMSPORT — Leah Bergey’s season has been full of record-breaking times, standout moments and quite a bit of invitational hardware to add to an already crowded trophy case. What mattered though, is how she did Saturday at the District 4 Championships.

Bergey simply shined. She cruised to a state berth in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, taking gold in both and notching a new Class 3A District 4 record in the 100 hurdles (14.99).

“It’s been a great season,” said Bergey, who also picked up gold Thursday in the high jump to make her the area’s lone three-event gold medalist at districts.

“Last year (false start) is in the past,” added Bergey. “It’s out of the way. I just kept running through my mind, then I took a deep breath and kept thinking about a clean start.”

Bergey headlined a big day for area girls.

Mifflinburg’s Julia Laubach took gold in the long jump with a leap of 17-2.75, and did so in the tough 3A class.

“Three-A is so hard to do in anything,” said Mifflinburg girls Coach Jeremiah Allen. “The standards are tough and every team is good. We just moved up (to 3A) so it’s awesome to have her going to states. She’s a competitor. She knew what she wanted to do here.”

Warrior Run’s Lauren Trapani, just a sophomore, claimed gold in the 3200 (11:22.70, a state-qualifying time). This year’s gold was satisfying for Trapani after struggling through illness at last year’s districts which kept her from states in her best individual events.

“It definitely feels good,” said Trapani. “Last year I didn’t think I could run, but I did. I’m glad I got the job done.”

Trapani also took second in the 800 (2:21.53), and qualified for states in that event as well, but she said she’s unsure whether or not she’ll compete in the 800 at Shippensburg. She’s also part of the 4x800 relay team, which qualified Thursday night with a second-place finish and state-qualifying time.

Lewisburg’s 4x400 relay team also took gold, and made it look easy. Maggie Daly, Selena Permyashkin, Chloe Michaels and Elena Malone simply ran away from the field to win in 4:03.83. The Dragons were confident, and not surprised with the result.

“First place and fast,” said Malone, of the Dragons’ goal coming in. “We know how to get it done. I know all these girls are amazing. I knew when Chloe came in she was ahead.”

As for this week at states, Malone said the goal is simple: “We want a 4:03, as fast as we can go.”

Malone also took second in the 800 with a state-qualifying time of 58.34.

Warrior Run’s Rylie Mong is going back to states after taking second in the pole vault (11-3). Teammate Cadee Wood finished sixth at 9-6.

“Last year I was kind of nervous,” admitted Mong. “Now I’m calm, I know what I’m doing, I know what to expect (going to states).”

Last year, Mong took third at states. Looking ahead this week, Mong said, “I’m really hoping for 11-6, 12 feet. I think I can get 11-6. The competition in District 4 has always been good. It drives me, that and I’m such good friends with the others, especially Hailey.”

There were a couple heart-breaking close calls in 2A, starting with the 3200, where Warrior Run’s Emma Miller (11:52.65) just missed punching a ticket to states. Teammate Alyssa Hoffman (12:09.94) was fourth, while Lewisburg’s Hannah Mirshahi (12:13.50) and Olivia Beattie (12:24.85) took fifth and sixth.

Lewisburg’s Munayyah Meredith also just missed punching a ticket, taking third in the shot put (35-2).

In the 1600, Lewisburg’s Sarah Ayers was fifth (5:33.39). Warrior Run’s Alanna Ranck (5:34.47) was sixth and Lewisburg’s Maggie Daly (5:34.93) seventh.

Lewisburg’s Anna Batkowski was fourth in the 800 (2:22.44). Warrior Run’s Kylee Brouse (2:26.87) was sixth and Lewisburg’s Kyra Binney (2:27.41) seventh.

Lewisburg’s Selena Permyashkin (1:01.02) was sixth in the 400 and teammate Chloe Michaels (1:01.29) seventh. In the high jump, Erin Hilkert was sixth at 4-10.

Meadowbrook Christian’s Masy Devlin took seventh in the 300 hurdles (49.94).

In 3A action, the top six earned medals, though only the champions and state qualifiers advanced.

Laubach (Mifflinburg) took third in the 100 (12.83) and Milton’s Janae Bergey (12.94) fourth. Milton’s Regi Wendt was sixth in the 400 (1:02.85). Janae also took sixth in the 200 (27.50)

In the 300 hurdles, Milton’s Kylie Roup was second in 48.11 and Alexis Beaver was fifth in 58.20.

Milton’s Leah Walter, just a freshman, took second in the 800 (2:19.61).

Mifflinburg’s Molly Kerstetter was fifth in the javelin (101-4) and Angelina Feliciano was sixth in the long jump (15-7.75).

Milton’s Riley Murray was fourth in the pole vault (9-0) and teammate Elizabeth Crites fifth (8-6). Mifflinburg’s Rebecca Reimer was sixth (8-6).
